Great Basin covers Wheeler Peak (13,065 ft), one of the country's darkest skies, Lehman Caves, and a bristlecone pine grove with trees over 4,000 years old. In summer, you can drive the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive to 10,000 feet, hike the alpine lakes loop (2.8 miles), and stargaze at Astronomy Amphitheater. The base town Baker has one gas station, three restaurants, and a total population under 90. Enter from Ely (70 miles west) on US 6/US 50.
Practical logistics
Free park entry (rare for a national park). Lehman Caves tours run $12 to $16 and book out — reserve on recreation.gov 30 days ahead in summer. Campgrounds ($20) are first-come at three sites; only Lower Lehman is plowed year-round. No hotels in the park. Sleep at Stargazer Inn or Border Inn in Baker ($110 to $160), or Prospector Hotel in Ely ($130). Wheeler Peak Road closes with snow, typically November through May — off-season you’re limited to the caves and lower trails.

Is Wheeler Peak summit hikeable for tourists?
It's a 8.6-mile round trip, 3,000 feet of gain, above 10,000 feet — serious for anyone not acclimatized. Weather turns fast; start at dawn, be off the ridge by 1pm.
