Who Ely suits
Ely suits Great Basin National Park visitors (Lehman Caves and Wheeler Peak are 65 miles east — Ely is the only real lodging base within an hour), US-50 Loneliest Road drivers, and railway heritage travellers using the Nevada Northern Railway, one of the best-preserved short-line steam railroads in the country. The historic Hotel Nevada (1929) on Aultman Street is characterful and worth a night for the vintage neon and the ghost-story reputation; the Prospector and the Ramada are more conventional. Ely also hosts a genuinely good downtown mural walk with more than 25 large murals painted over the past 20 years.
Who should skip it
Skip Ely if you want variety of food or nightlife — restaurants are limited and mostly close by 9pm, and the drive to anywhere else is long (Las Vegas is 4.5 hours, Salt Lake City is 3.5). Skip winter without confidence in mountain driving; US-6 and US-50 both cross passes above 7,000 feet and can close in storms. Skip it if you expect chain-hotel consistency; even the modern properties feel slightly worn, and the historic hotel is atmospheric but has thin walls and small bathrooms. Prices climb around Great Basin's summer season and during Fire and Ice railway events.
What's within walking distance
From downtown Ely you can walk the Ely Mural Walk (a self-guided route past 25+ murals), the Nevada Northern Railway East Ely Depot and museum, the White Pine Public Museum, and Aultman Street's small strip of restaurants, casinos and the Hotel Nevada's bar. The Renaissance Village — a collection of restored ethnic-heritage cottages — is a short walk. The railway offers steam and diesel rides seasonally, including Polar Express in December and a rare Star Train that stops in the desert for stargazing. Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park is 20 miles south; Great Basin is 65 miles east.

Should I stay in Ely or in Baker (near Great Basin)?
Baker has two small motels and a couple of restaurants right at the park entrance — atmospheric but limited. Ely has more rooms, more food options and the railway, at the cost of a 65-mile morning drive. Most first-timers stay in Ely and day-trip; return visitors often prefer Baker.
How reliable is US-50 in winter?
It is a state-maintained highway and generally kept open, but storms can close the passes for hours at a time. Check NDOT road conditions before setting out, carry chains November-April, and don’t rely on cell service between towns.
