Who should skip it
Skip Tonopah if you need modern amenities or restaurant choice — the town has about 2,500 residents and the dining scene reflects that. Skip it if you’re driving through in daylight and can push on to Beatty or Hawthorne. Skip winter without knowing the forecast; at 6,000 feet snow happens and US-95 can drift closed briefly. Skip it if you want to combine it with any other Nevada destination easily; the nearest sizable towns are Bishop, California (2.5 hours), Ely (2.5 hours), and Beatty (1.5 hours), and none of them are exactly bustling either.
What's within walking distance
From the Mizpah you can walk to the Tonopah Historic Mining Park (10 minutes uphill, working headframes and a self-guided tour through actual mine buildings), the Central Nevada Museum, the Clown Motel next door (yes it exists, and yes there is a cemetery behind it), and the small stretch of downtown Main Street with a handful of restaurants and shops. The Tonopah Stargazing Park is a short drive to the edge of town — worth timing a visit for a moonless night. Belmont Ghost Town is 45 minutes northeast on a partly unpaved road; the Extraterrestrial Highway starts 60 miles south at Warm Springs.

Is the Mizpah Hotel actually haunted?
The hotel embraces the Lady in Red story of a murdered prostitute on the fifth floor, and rooms 502 and 504 are the requested ones. Take it as marketing colour rather than paranormal fact — but the 1907 building itself is genuinely evocative regardless.
How dark is Tonopah's night sky?
It reads Bortle Class 2 on typical nights, meaning the Milky Way is bright enough to cast shadows and the Andromeda galaxy is naked-eye visible. The Stargazing Park has telescope pads and interpretive signs.
