River-casino town on the Colorado at the Arizona border — cheaper than Vegas, packed with retiree snowbirds October to April.

Laughlin was a bait shop on the Colorado River until Don Laughlin bought it in 1966 and turned it into a nine-casino strip along the water — 95 miles south of Vegas, right across the river from Bullhead City, Arizona. Ten hotel-casinos line Casino Drive on the Nevada bank, connected by a riverwalk and shuttle boats. Population is 7,000 but swells to five times that in winter when the RV parks fill with Canadian and Midwestern retirees escaping the cold.

At 9pm the riverwalk is busy with casino-hoppers and the Colorado Belle paddlewheeler is lit up like a wedding cake. Weekends bring bikers — the Laughlin River Run every April is one of the biggest motorcycle rallies in the west. Suits budget gamblers, snowbirds, and anyone who wants a river view with their slot machine. Skip if you want dining variety or anyone under 55 — median age here on a Tuesday afternoon is not what you’re picturing.

Food is where Laughlin shows its budget-town bones: casino buffets from $12-18, prime rib specials on Tuesdays, and little else beyond a few steakhouses inside the Edgewater and Aquarius. Weekday nights Casino Drive is half-empty and parking is easy outside every property; weekends and holidays the same street backs up with RVs circling for a spot. Locals from Bullhead City cross the bridge for the $4.99 breakfast specials before 9am, then clear out before the tour buses from Vegas arrive around noon.

Summer here is brutal — 115°F is routine from June through August, and the river barely takes the edge off; casino pools stay busy until well after dark because the water is the only relief going. Come November the string of neon towers along the water turns into a genuinely pretty scene, with cool desert nights and patio heaters out on the casino decks. Anyone chasing nightlife, fine dining, or a 30-something crowd should book Vegas instead — Laughlin is a slower, cheaper, older place, and it knows it.

Where to stay

Casino Drive is the entire show — Harrah's, Golden Nugget, Aquarius, and the Edgewater from $55-90 midweek. The Colorado Belle paddlewheeler is the character stay from $65. Avoid anything not directly on Casino Drive — the alternatives are motels on the Bullhead City side across the river, which are cheaper but require a bridge run or ferry to reach the casinos. April Bike Week and October snowbird arrival double prices; summer heat (115°F+) drops them to lows. Rooms with a river view add $10-20 a night over a parking-lot view and are worth it for the sunset alone. Book midweek in January or February, once snowbirds have settled into their RVs, for the best rates. First-timers should book the Colorado Belle or the Edgewater directly on Casino Drive, putting every water taxi dock and restaurant within a five-minute walk.

Casino Riverwalk End to End (3 km)

Start at the north end of Casino Drive at the Aquarius, walk south along the paved riverwalk past Edgewater, Colorado Belle paddlewheeler, Pioneer, Golden Nugget, and Harrah's — three miles of connected boardwalk directly on the Colorado River. Cross over each casino's plaza when you want AC, then rejoin the water. Best around sunset when the Arizona cliffs opposite go orange. Benches and shaded ramadas appear every few hundred yards; allow about 45 minutes end to end at an easy pace.

Getting there & around

Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport is on the Arizona side, small commercial flights from a few western hubs. Most visitors drive from Las Vegas — 95 miles south, 90 minutes on US 95 and NV 163. Charter shuttle buses run from Vegas casinos to Laughlin casinos on weekend packages. Once here, the free water taxis and casino shuttles handle Casino Drive; you need a car for Oatman or Grapevine Canyon. From the airport terminal it's a five-minute taxi across the Laughlin Bridge to any Casino Drive property, typically $10-15 flat. Harry Reid International in Las Vegas is the nearest major hub for connecting flights. Parking is free at every casino, so a rental car is the easiest way in without booking a shuttle package.
